The Solar Dynamics Observatory took image of mid-level solar flare emissions.

March 31, 2022 at 2:35 p.m.: The Sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, an event imaged by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, the Solar Dynamics Observatory that probes the Sun.

Solar flares emanating from the Sun are powerful bursts of energy, which are a sudden increase in brightness at a location, that occurs when plasma is thrown out of the Sun’s corona by a magnetic field. Solar flares and solar explosions can pose many risks to human equipment and humans.

A solar flame is a large, luminous gas that extends outward from the surface of the Sun, also called a solar filament. Scientists still do not know the cause of solar flares, but scientists are researching how and why solar flares form.
