In 2017, an eighth planet was discovered in the Kepler-90 system.

It is amazing to think that our solar system is now tied for the most planets around a single star with the newfound discovery of Kepler-90i. In 2017, This exoplanet was discovered using artificial intelligence from Google, which shows that technology can be used to explore the unknown beyond our solar system. This recent discovery has been made possible with data from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope.

Kepler-90i is a sizzling hot, rocky planet that orbits its star once every 14.4 days. It was discovered using machine learning, which is an approach to artificial intelligence in which computers are able to “learn” and identify planets by finding in Kepler data instances where the telescope recorded changes in starlight caused by planets beyond our solar system. It is incredible to think that technology can help us uncover secrets of the universe such as this one.

The discovery of Kepler-90i brings our solar system to a total of eight planets, which is a remarkable feat. It also brings us one step closer to understanding more about our universe and what lies beyond our own planet. As Paul Hertz, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division said, “This finding shows that our data will be a treasure trove available to innovative researchers for years to come.”

Not only does this discovery add to our knowledge and understanding of the universe, but it also shows us the power of technology and machine learning. With advancements in technology, it is becoming easier than ever to explore the unknown and uncover hidden mysteries of the universe. Who knows what else we might find with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning?

What is even more fascinating about this discovery is that Kepler-90i is located 2,545 light-years away from Earth. To put that into perspective, it would take us over 2 million years to get there with current technology! That being said, this discovery serves as proof that there can be life beyond our own planet and solar system.

Planets are getting easier to discovery with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fast becoming one of the most important advances in technology today. AI is not only being used for mundane tasks like facial recognition, but it is also being employed for more scientific uses, like the discovery of an planet in a distant solar system.

In December 2017, researchers Christopher Shallue and Andrew Vanderburg used AI to identify an eighth planet orbiting Kepler-90, a star located in the constellation Draco. The computer used was trained to recognize exoplanets from the light readings recorded by Kepler – the miniscule change in brightness captured when a planet passed in front of, or transited, a star. The researchers utilized a technique called a “neural network”, which is inspired by the way neurons connect in the human brain. After sifting through Kepler data, they found weak transit signals from a previously-missed eighth planet orbiting Kepler-90.

This discovery has been an incredible accomplishment for AI technology and has proven its usefulness in science. However, this is not the first time that machine learning has been used in Kepler research. This groundbreaking discovery has also demonstrated that AI can be used to detect even the weakest signals of distant worlds.

The newly found planet is called Kepler-90i and is about 30 percent larger than Earth. Unfortunately, due to its proximity to its star, its average surface temperature is believed to exceed 800 degrees Fahrenheit, making it uninhabitable for life as we know it. Its outermost planet, Kepler-90h, orbits at a similar distance to its star as Earth does to the Sun. Although it may be more amiable to life forms than its inner sibling, we still have no idea what could actually be living on either of these newly discovered planets.

The advancement of AI technology is allowing us to explore space and uncover secrets that have been hidden from us for centuries. We are now able to find exoplanets that were never thought possible before and are continuing to explore even further into the unknown. This research is exciting for astronomers and scientists alike as it paves the way for more discoveries and advancements in space exploration.

The Kepler-90 system was compared to our own solar system.

In 2017, an eighth planet was discovered in the Kepler-90 system.

Astronomers have found a miniature version of our own solar system – the Kepler-90 star system. With the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), they have identified a new planet orbiting the star system, Kepler-90i. This is an exciting breakthrough in exoplanet research, and it is a reminder of the power of data and machine learning. This journey began when NASA Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow and astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Vanderburg, noticed some interesting features in the Kepler-90 star system. He observed that, like our solar system, it contained small planets inside and larger planets outside, but that everything was scrunched much closer together.

In order to study this unusual system further, he approached Google’s Senior Software Engineer on their research team, Christopher Shallue, who was interested in exploring exoplanets using large data sets. Shallue proposed using a neural network to analyse the data from Kepler. The team trained the neural network to identify exoplanets by using a set of 15,000 previously vetted signals from the Kepler exoplanet catalog. In the test set, the neural network correctly identified true planets and false positives 96 percent of the time.

The team then used the neural network to search for weaker signals in 670 star systems that already had multiple known planets. Their assumption was that multiple-planet systems would be the best places to look for more exoplanets. And they were right! The neural network detected a seventh planet orbiting Kepler-90 – Kepler-90i – which is 30% larger than Earth. This is an result and shows just how powerful AI can be when used to analyse large data sets.

Kepler-90i, an exoplanet discovered in the Kepler-90 system, is the eighth and outermost planet from its star. This is the first system discovered to have as many planets as our own. It is an exciting development for those studying the universe and searching for extraterrestrial life. The Kepler mission was designed to search for exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system. After four years of observing one patch of space, it successfully found thousands of potential planets. Although most of them turned out to be false positives, some are real planets. This is where the neural network comes in.

The neural network was designed to sift through the Kepler data set and identify any real planets that may have been overlooked. And it worked! It found not only Kepler-90i, but also an Earth-sized planet in the Kepler-80 system — Kepler-80g — that’s part of a resonant chain of five planets locked together in gravitational harmony. The results of this research were published in The Astronomical Journal, and prove that there is still much more to find in the depths of our universe. As Jessie Dotson, project scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, said, “New ways of looking at the data — such as this early-stage research to apply machine learning algorithms — promise to continue to yield significant advances in our understanding of planetary systems around other stars.
